Met Eireann has issued a severe weather alert for the entire country starting from this morning [Friday] and running into next week, with ice forecast for day and night and extensive snow.

Santa paid a very special visit to Mullingar Civic Offices on Wednesday to help the European Recycling Platform (ERP), launch its Christmas Appeal in Westmeath. ERP is Ireland’s only pan European compliance scheme for electrical waste and battery recycling. On the day 278 children visited Santa and an incredible 36kg of WEEE toys was recycled and 46kg of batteries were recycled, which is the equivalent of over 1,840 AA batteries.

The people of Westmeath are being encouraged to Make Their Mark on Census 2011 by applying to be a Census enumerator. Some 5,000 enumerators will be required around the country to ensure that Ireland has a successful Census. And 92 Census enumerators will be needed in County Westmeath.
